Those of you who know me well enough, either in real life or by following me for any length of time in some online format, know that I'm a terrible self-promoter and feel a wee bit icky when pushing "me" centered things, as opposed to promoting others or certain causes. However, there comes a time when one has to push those feelings aside and promote themselves without apology. Now is one of those times.
It is time for me, with the partnership of
Joe 'Covenant' Lamb (
@JoeCovenant), to add another sphere to my entertainment/media offerings. After much consideration, I will be launching my own radio station. Doing so requires money that I currently do not have. This is where I must convince at least 300 of the tens of thousands of monthly visitors to my various online things to donate, on average, $10 each.
You may be thinking to yourself, "Wait, what?! Didn't you just launch your radio station? What is going on here?" And this is where I think a handy dandy FAQ would be beneficial.
Q: Wait, what?! Didn't you just launch your radio station? What is going on here?
A: Yes, at the end of last year/ beginning of this year, I did play a huge role in the envisioning, creating, designing and launching of a radio station. Without getting into details that are not for public consumption but also feeling as if I owe my wonderful supporters some form of explanation, things are not going according to the original agreement. These things are starting to wreak havoc on both my physical and mental health. After much thought, consideration and consulation, it is time for me to do my own thing; eliminating the causes of the stress that is not doing my body good.
Q: So how much money are you hoping to raise?
A: I need to raise $3000 USD to cover the costs of running the station for 1 year, plus throw in a couple of small equipment purchases that will be necessary to keep the station running. If 300 of you donate at least $10, this is easily accomplished. Considering I get 10s of 1000s of readers on
Geeky Pleasures alone, hopefully this is an easy task.
Q: What happens in a year when you no longer have funds to keep the station going?
A: Hopefully by the end of a year, she will be monetised and not only paying for herself but paying any staff she may have. There will also be a donate button on the site, just like
Geeky Pleasures has, in the event people want to donate throughout the year.
Q: Wait, don't you have a fabulous sponsor, who goes by the name of
Will Bradley (
@willbradley), who provides your website hosting?
A: Yes, Will does host my sites at his cost. Those are at a great cost. Keeping my 3 personal websites up each month is not cheap. People like them so much that they suck 2 GB of bandwidth a day. May not be a terribly huge number, but it isn't exactly a small number either. My sites get more than their fair share of visitors. However, despite Will being generous enough to pay for the hosting, preventing them from going offline last summer, he is not a charity. He will be supporting in a small way, but he cannot afford to sponsor this as well. It is both of our hope that all of this will be completey monetised soon enough.
Q: When will this new station be launching?
A: She will launch June 1, 2011.
Q: What will happen if you don't raise $3000 by June 1, 2011.
A: Well, hopefully that doesn't happen. There is a bit of a back-up plan if that doesn't happen, however I'm not going to say what it is. I don't want to discourage people from donating, thinking that they'll still get their free entertainment if they don't help out. There has to be an end point. No longer can I continue doing what I am doing without getting paid. As much as I love entertaining people, I cannot feed my children off of air and the warm fuzzy feelings and support you all give me.
Q: What will this new station be called?
A: That is the question of the day! I don't have the faintest of ideas what to call her. I fear I gave away my best idea to the other place. Joe cannot think of one either. So we thought it would be groovy to hold a contest! You have a shot at naming the station. If you have a good idea for a name, email it to
jules@juliasherred.com with the subject: Name That Station. Joe and I may pick which one we feel is the best or we pay have a poll, allowing you to decide. I want to send something physical to the person who's idea is chosen. Exactly what, I haven't decided upon yet.
Q: If you don't have a name, how will you build the website and host it and junk?
A: Trust me, I have that already figured out. The site will be a subdomain of
juliasherred.com, however I'll be YOURL'ing all the pages, giving it whatever name is chosen. At least that is the plan for now. It may change slightly over the next week or so.
(to be continued as they only allow you to make this posts so long)
